Inspiration

As a homeowner who’d dealt with unlicensed contractors, budget overruns, and missed milestones during a kitchen remodel, I knew there had to be a better way. My neighbors shared similar frustrations—renovations should be manageable, not stressful. That’s when I set out to build Contractor Pro: a platform that puts homeowners in control, while giving reliable contractors a fair way to connect with clients.

What it does

Contractor Pro lets homeowners search for verified, licensed contractors by trade/location, request and compare detailed quotes, track project milestones (with photo logs and payment approval tied to completion), and conduct quality inspections with customizable checklists. Contractors get tools to manage profiles, submit quotes, and update project status—no more miscommunication or unmet expectations.

How we built it

We started with core user stories (homeowner quote comparison, contractor verification) and mapped the page structure (search, profile, project tracking). We built the frontend with React for a smooth UI, used Node.js/Express for the backend, and MongoDB to store user/project data. AWS hosted the platform, and Google OAuth API handled secure authentication. We iterated on the quote comparison and milestone tracking features based on feedback from local contractors and homeowners.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdle was designing the contractor verification logic—ensuring license/insurance status was accurate and updated in real time without third-party API integrations (out of scope for this release). We also struggled with balancing simplicity (for less tech-savvy homeowners) with robust functionality (like change order management). Testing payment approval workflows to prevent premature releases was another tough spot.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created an intuitive flow that lets homeowners compare 3 quotes side-by-side, built a photo log system tied to project milestones, and enforced strict business rules (e.g., only one active quote per contractor/project). Most importantly, beta testers (local homeowners) reported feeling “in control” of their renovations—exactly what we set out to achieve.

What we learned

We learned to prioritize user needs over feature bloat (cutting nice-to-haves like in-app chat for launch) and that clear status indicators (verified badges, milestone statuses) build trust faster than complex explanations. We also gained insight into regulatory nuances of contractor licensing across different regions in North America and Europe.

What's next for this project

First, we’ll add mobile responsiveness (no native app yet, but a mobile-friendly web experience). Next, we’ll integrate basic in-app messaging to reduce email back-and-forth, and explore third-party license verification APIs to automate contractor checks. We also plan to add warranty reminder notifications via SMS (beyond email) and expand payment tracking to support escrow integrations long-term.
