What if you die tomorrow?
What happens to your digital life — your passwords, accounts, messages, photos, documents, and everything you intended to pass on? In most cases, this information becomes inaccessible or permanently lost, leaving families without guidance or access.
Problem
Today, people live a significant portion of their lives online. From personal memories like photos, voice notes, and messages to critical information such as passwords, financial accounts, and private documents — everything exists in a fragmented digital space.
Despite this, there is no simple, secure, and trustworthy system that ensures this digital information can be responsibly managed or transferred when a person becomes inactive for an extended period of time.
This creates a gap between digital life and long-term continuity.
Solution – Continuum
Continuum is a digital continuity and legacy management platform designed to securely store a user’s digital life and ensure controlled access only under verified long-term inactivity.
Instead of relying on assumptions, Continuum is built around a responsibility-based continuity model, where access is carefully managed through user-defined rules and trusted relationships.
The goal is simple: To ensure a person’s digital presence is preserved and handled responsibly when they are no longer able to actively manage it.
How It Works
Continuum is built around three core components:
1. Digital Vault A secure storage system for sensitive information such as:
- Account credentials
- Personal messages
- Documents
- Photos and media
2. Activity Check-ins Users periodically confirm their presence through simple check-ins, keeping their status updated and active.
3. Trusted Contact System If a user remains inactive for an extended period:
- Trusted contacts are notified
- Verification steps are initiated
- Access is only granted through a multi-step confirmation process
This ensures that sensitive data is never exposed without proper authorization.
How We Built It
Continuum was developed as a functional MVP with a focus on trust, usability, and real-world workflow design.
The system includes:
- A status-based dashboard (Active / At Risk / Inactive)
- A check-in mechanism for user activity confirmation
- A structured digital vault for data storage
- A trusted contact escalation and verification flow
The emphasis was on building a realistic and intuitive system flow rather than over-engineering backend complexity.
Challenges We Faced
Designing a system involving sensitive personal data required careful consideration of security, simplicity, and ethical responsibility.
Key challenges included:
- Designing a safe and responsible access system for sensitive data
- Preventing unauthorized or premature access through strict verification layers
- Keeping the system simple while maintaining strong trust logic
- Defining clear boundaries for inactivity-based workflows
We solved this by introducing a layered trust system built on user control and verification, rather than automated assumptions.
What We Learned
This project reinforced the importance of building systems that prioritize trust and responsibility over complexity.
We learned:
- Clear problem definition leads to better product design
- Trust is a core system feature, not just a concept
- Simplicity improves usability and adoption
- Ethical design decisions are critical in personal-data systems
Final Thought
Continuum is about giving people control over their digital presence beyond active use. It ensures that important information, memories, and data are not lost in fragmented systems, but instead remain secure, structured, and accessible only through trusted and responsible processes when needed.
