Contextly:

a browser extension that translates complex articles into clear, relatable explanations right on the page. No switching apps, no searching. Just instant clarity, in context, as you read.

Inspiration

Gen Z readers want to stay informed, but the news often feels inaccessible. Dense political language, historical baggage, and abstract economic terms make it hard to truly understand what’s going on. We noticed that while many tools summarize news, they rarely explain it in a meaningful way.

That’s the gap Contextly is built to fill.

What We Learned

In exploring how people—especially younger audiences—process information, we discovered the power of metaphor. Metaphors help translate abstract or complex ideas into something tangible and familiar. This became the foundation of our approach: delivering not just shorter news, but more understandable news.

How We Built It

Contextly combines: A custom metaphor-generation engine trained on diverse language patterns A mobile-first, React-based interface focused on clarity and speed Every feature was designed to help users grasp not just the facts, but the why behind them.

Challenges We Faced

Simplification without distortion Translating complex topics into accessible language without losing nuance required careful calibration. Generating useful metaphors Ensuring metaphors felt natural, relevant, and actually helped explain the news took significant iteration. Maintaining context Providing immediate, in-line explanations without overwhelming the user meant balancing depth with brevity.

Contextly turns world events into metaphors you actually understand—instantly, in context, and without losing meaning.
