Content Moderation System
Inspiration
With millions of posts, comments, images, and videos shared online every day, ensuring a safe digital environment has become increasingly challenging. Manual moderation is slow, expensive, and difficult to scale, allowing harmful content to spread before action can be taken. This inspired us to build an AI-powered Content Moderation System that can automatically detect and moderate inappropriate content in real time.
What it does
The Content Moderation System analyzes text, images, and videos using Artificial Intelligence before they are published. It detects harmful, abusive, explicit, or inappropriate content and classifies it into three categories:
Safe– Content is published. Flagged– Content is sent for human review. Blocked– Content is automatically rejected.
The system helps reduce manual moderation effort while improving speed, accuracy, and consistency.
How we built it
We developed the frontend using React.js, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to provide a simple and responsive user interface. The backend was built with FastAPI (Python) to handle content processing and API communication. For AI-based moderation, we integrated Hugging Face Transformer models for text analysis, OpenCV and YOLOv8 for image processing, and video frame analysis for video moderation. MongoDB stores moderation results and user data, while AWS EC2 and S3 are used for deployment and file storage.
Challenges we ran into
- Handling different types of content (text, images, and videos) in a single workflow.
- Reducing false positives and false negatives during AI classification.
- Processing videos efficiently while maintaining real-time performance.
- Ensuring the system remains scalable for large volumes of user-generated content.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a unified AI moderation system supporting multiple content types.
- Achieved real-time content classification before publication.
- Reduced dependence on manual moderation through intelligent automation.
- Designed a scalable architecture suitable for modern digital platforms.
What we learned
This project strengthened our understanding of Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, FastAPI, React, cloud deployment, and AI model integration. We also learned the importance of balancing AI automation with human review to build responsible and trustworthy moderation systems.
What's next for Content Moderation System
Our future plans include:
- Supporting multiple languages for global moderation.
- Detecting deepfakes and AI-generated harmful content.
- Improving contextual understanding to reduce false detections.
- Adding explainable AI to provide reasons behind moderation decisions.
- Continuously improving the models using moderator feedback and new datasets.
