Inspiration

My inspiration comes from cherished childhood memories, and I aimed to create something valuable for education. By using my design thinking, I wanted to shape young minds from an early age. My product combines sustainability and fun, simplifying the concept as much as possible. Building forts from cardboard boxes is a nostalgic childhood activity that adds an element of enjoyment to learning. My goal was to encourage group work among students and make it convenient for teachers to organize group activities. The tables are easily arrangeable, and extra parts can be stored conveniently while working.

What it does

ConstrucTable is a classroom table consisting of three parts: two sides and the top. Students can assemble it themselves using simple joineries. It functions as a regular table during class lectures but can be disassembled and arranged in various configurations with other similar tables. The aim is to encourage students to create interesting arrangements for group activities.

How we built it

After extensive research and brainstorming, I settled on this concept. I created initial mock-ups using paper and scraps I found nearby. The final prototype was constructed using larger cardboard sheets from discarded boxes, and I reinforced the inner structure with honeycomb cardboard to provide strength and weight (enough for an 11-year-old to carry and assemble).

Challenges we ran into

Conducting research in different parts of India, particularly while I was in Jorhat, Assam, posed communication challenges with local students. Being new to the area, I explored various schools and met new people during the research phase, which turned out to be an exciting challenge. I enjoyed learning about their education system and hearing their school stories.

My process was highly iterative, involving constant ideation and user feedback. Gathering scrap cardboard for my prototype was both fun and environmentally responsible, and I'm satisfied with how I repurposed it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud of conducting such a comprehensive project independently. Despite encountering numerous challenges, I persevered, thanks in part to the support of my friends and faculty. I take pride in merging sustainability and collaborative learning in a single project, addressing two pertinent topics.

What we learned

This project taught me a lot, from conducting in-depth research to creating the final prototype. I explored and experimented with various materials, honed my communication skills, learned different ideation methods, and discovered how to make the most of available resources. Additionally, I gained experience with 3D software like Keyshot and Rhino.

What's next for ConstrucTable: Innovative School Classroom Furniture

My plan is to create proper prototypes of the tables and conduct user testing with a larger audience. I aim to use this feedback to further develop the project. My dream is for ConstrucTable tables to be used by students not only across India but worldwide!
