Inspiration: Many Africans face real challenges accessing the gadgets they need — whether it's due to unavailability, high reseller costs, or unreliable online marketplaces. We were inspired to create Constance to solve this problem and give users access to quality, hard-to-find gadgets through a platform they can trust.
What it does: Constance is an online store that curates rare and in-demand tech gadgets and makes them available to African consumers. It connects users with authentic products that are often unavailable locally, offering an easier, more reliable way to discover and order gadgets they’ve always wanted.
How we built it: We began with user research and market validation to understand which gadgets were most in demand. The MVP was developed using:
- React for the frontend interface
- Node.js and Express for backend services
- MongoDB for the database
- Cloud hosting to support scalability and uptime
We also integrated payment gateways suitable for African markets and designed the platform for mobile-first accessibility.
Challenges we ran into: Product sourcing: Finding reliable suppliers and authentic gadgets was a big challenge.
- Logistics & shipping: Delivering across multiple countries with limited infrastructure was complex.
- Payment integration: Ensuring smooth, secure transactions in regions with varied financial regulations took time.
- Trust building: Convincing users to buy online, especially for premium tech, required thoughtful communication.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: Validated demand with 456 early signups
- Designed and launched our MVP platform
- Initiated supplier conversations and early logistics testing
- Built a clear roadmap from user discovery to delivery
What we learned: Listening to users early made our MVP more focused and relevant
- Trust and transparency are just as important as tech in African markets
- Cloud infrastructure is essential to handle growth and regional scale
- Simple UX design is powerful, especially for mobile-first users
What's next for Constance: Finalize supplier agreements and logistics partnerships
