Inspiration

We wanted to create a system that has fast translations for english to spanish that still honors fixed terminology for organizations and courses, instead of generic machine translations on common important words and phrases across many files submitted.

What it does

This translation tool allows users to translate English text and PDF files into Spanish quickly and easily, with glossary support for consistent terminology.

How we built it

we used PHP on our schools server with Oracle for Glossary storage, Google Cloud Translation API v3 for text and PDF translation, and a CSV -> Cloud Storage -> glossary sync so the cloud API can match the database

Challenges we ran into

some challenges that we ran into during this project includes keeping the database and cloud glossary in sync and handling API fallbacks when glossary output was missing. we also had some issues with auth and credentials

Accomplishments that we're proud of

we are proud that we accomplished an end to end demo which ties user edited glossaries to real API behavior for translations of both PDFs and text entries

What we learned

We learned how to connect our campus database to a cloud API with a small repeatable pipeline
