Inspiration
Our project was inspired by a game called The Final Earth, a community game, where the user must place down buildings to consume and generate different resources to keep a city thriving.
What it does
Our project was designed to be a fun game where users can run in an open style world, building their empire of buildings, while also learning about the impacts of these buildings used. Since resource conservation is very important, the whole aim of the game is to not generate too many carbon emissions. Since players use buildings like coal power plants and oil pump jacks, which both generate emissions, they must balance these efficient buildings with less efficient buildings that have less carbon impact such as a tree farm, or recycle plant to prevent global warming (they lose).
How we built it
We used a Software called Godot which is an open-source gaming engine that makes use of the GD Script programming language. We chose this since it has numerous applications inside and outside of gaming.
Challenges we ran into
Many challenges we ran into include, Making a proper UI, making an infinitely generating map, and making it so you could place your own buildings.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Making a polished camera movement system, a themed UI, and building design.
What we learned
Many of us on this team had never used GD Script before so it was lots of trial and error, to get our bearings on this language.
What's next for Conserve the Environment
We hope to fully finish, and polish the game so that it can be fully playable and can be distributed for others to play and learn about the effects of our carbon emissions today, and how that affects our tomorrow.
