Making conservation, closer to yourself

Inspiration

Nature conservation is often seen as out of reach for ordinary individuals, even though everyone's small contribution can have a big impact on environmental sustainability. Conservaself emerged from the idea of making conservation activities accessible in an interactive way, so that anyone can take part in protecting the earth. We aim to provide a platform that allows users to easily engage in various activities, such as ecotourism, flora and fauna conservation, and climate change mitigation efforts.

What it does

Conservaself is an app that connects users with various aspects of conservation. Through Conservaself, users can:

  • Donate funds that are directly allocated to the protection of specific species or conservation sites.
  • Monitor and see the progress of the flora/fauna or conservation area they support through the “Feeding Site” and “Planting Site.”
  • Access Visitor Idea, a platform to share ideas and collaborate with other conservation communities, allowing users to exchange experiences, information, and new ideas in conservation efforts.

How we built it

Conservaself is built using:

  • Frontend: React for an interactive user interface, and TypeScript for more secure data type management.
  • Backend: Node.js with Express.js framework to handle API requests.
  • Database: MongoDB for unstructured data and Firebase Realtime Database for activities that require real-time updates.
  • Cloud Services: Using Google Cloud Platform for hosting and data storage.
  • APIs: Integration with Google Maps API to display conservation locations, and Stripe for the donation system.

What we learned

From this project, we realized that conservation can be more inclusive and engaging when supported by the right and accessible technology.

What's next for Conservaself

The next step for Conservaself is to develop more interactive educational features and launch campaigns to encourage more users to participate. We also plan to expand our integration with conservation partners, both local and international, to create greater impact in environmental conservation.
