Inspiration Millions of older adults remain digitally marginalized due to complex interfaces and fast-evolving tech. WhatsApp's simplicity and ubiquity among seniors make it an ideal platform to bridge this digital divide and empower seniors with AI-driven memory and assistance.
Function Care + supports WhatsApp as the sole communication channel to provide seniors with a conversational AI assistant that manages reminders, appointments and important information. It uses natural language understanding via OpenAI and memory layer using Supermemory to offer personalized, voice-friendly interaction.
Building We integrated WhatsApp API with FastAPI backend, OpenAI for NLU and Supermemory API for user memory. The system logs interactions in SQLite and flags patterns for caregivers who monitor via a React dashboard with remote controls.
Challenges Maintaining simplicity while handling complex conversational intents on WhatsApp required adaptive NLU tuning. Privacy in a widely used social platform was a priority. Ensuring reliable message delivery and managing user errors in an unstructured chat environment were ongoing challenges.
Learning WhatsApp's widespread use among older adults is a huge advantage for digital inclusion. Designing for voice notes and brief text inputs improves accessibility. Privacy and trust must be deeply embedded. Collaboration with caregivers is essential for meaningful impact.
Care + We plan to expand to multilingual support, add proactive health alerts, and explore WhatsApp business features to enhance caregiver collaboration. ScalingCare + to serve millions of seniors through WhatsApp remains our long-term goal.
