Inspiration

Connect Therapy was inspired by Zoe's personal experience with physical therapy: During the lockdown, I began running with my Dad to stay physically healthy. At first, I couldn't understand why anyone would like running, but over time I began recognizing how it built my discipline, gave me a sense of accomplishment, and helped me to spend more time in nature. However, just a few weeks before I would join my school's cross country team, I started experiencing knee pain and soreness that completely put a stop to my runs. This was devastating, and I began physical therapy to try and solve the problem. I attended weekly physical therapy sessions, but at home, I would often forget to do my daily exercises. I could not track my progress or see any trends with my recovery. I could not contact physical therapists and it was difficult to keep track of handouts, exercise sheets, and resources. I was left demotivated due to a lack of structure and organization. This is why we created Connect Therapy.

What it does

Connect Therapy is a comprehensive supplement to physical therapy that organizes and detangles the recovery process. Connect Therapy allows the user to find physical therapists, maintain communication, organize their exercises, get reminders to do their exercises, and track their progress all in one app!

How we built it

We prototyped Connect Therapy through Figma. We organized our app into these main features: A Home Page: includes a calendar, reminders, exercises that need to be done, and a summary of their recovery progress. Check-In Page: includes a survey sent by therapist to hear feedback from the user Search Page: allows the user to search for physical therapists directly through the app or connect with a therapist they already know Messages: Allows the user to message their physical therapist directly through the app Profile Page: allows the user to create an account and save their progress across devices

Challenges we ran into

We did not have much experience with Figma, so it took a lot of trial and error to create our prototype. One thing we had trouble with was making our pages scrollable. Some of our pages included a lot of information and could not fit all at once on the screen. We struggled with managing the frames, which were needed to make the screens scrollable. However, we utilized online resources and trial and error to tackle this problem.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of learning new design software, Figma, to create a well-rounded prototype for the Connect Therapy app in just a few days. Neither of us have extensive experience with Figma, and we relied on our curiosity, resilience, and problem-solving skills to develop our project. In addition, we designed an app with the potential to improve the lives of millions of physical therapy patients around the world.

What we learned

We learned how to find a problem, create a solution, plan out our app, make good design choices, and create an app prototype on Figma. We brainstormed potential problems we would like to solve, and decided on the disorganization of physical therapy. We then brainstormed ideas on how we would like to solve this problem. We ended up combining our ideas for how physical therapy could be better and settled on an all-in-one app. We planned out our app, drawing out every screen on Google Jamboard. We drafted potential design layouts and how our app should be organized. In addition, we discussed our color palette, choosing beige and green for its symbolism and impact on the user, and chose easy to read fonts. Once we had all of this organized, we began making our prototype on Figma. We did not have much experience, but we figured things out as we went.

What's next for Connect Therapy

We hope to bring our Connect Therapy prototype to the next level by implementing code and publishing a finished app for download. As a real app, Connect Therapy can reinvent the physical therapy experience for every user. With Connect Therapy, users can have a much smoother, simpler physical therapy and recovery process because our app provides access to a consolidated database of resources. Physical therapy should not detract from your wellbeing by being unnecessarily complex or confusing; Connect Therapy is a comprehensive solution for all.
