Inspiration

We were inspired to pursue this project because of the damages Covid-19 has had on peoples' mental health. Covid-19 has brought many changes to our daily lives, impacting the way we socialize, exercise and other daily activities. It has strained the worldwide economy and the finances of many people around the world. All these factors contribute to the deterioration of peoples' mental health states.

What it does

Our application allows Mental Health Professional to connect to people we are struggling with mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic. It allows Mental Health Professionals to improve their own resume while helping out the worldwide community.

How we built it

We built the application using Java. Our application is a prototype that includes basic features that we would like a full-version to have. We used repl.it to code together as a group.

Challenges we ran into

A problem we faced while coding was the creation of an updating volunteer-participant list. We solved the problem through trial and error, as well as research. Another problem we faced was time. Most of us were really busy and so we were unable to add some features to the prototype that we otherwise could have.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the application we built given our limited time and resources. We are proud that we were able to learn a lot about coding GUIs and the process of product development. We are also happy to have create a relatively good graphic design for our first GUI.

What we learned

For all of us this was our first we coded a Java GUI application. Using resources found on the internet, we learned of different functions and techniques available for us to code a Java GUI application. This hackathon learning process has allowed us to learn more about developing applications (code-wise) and the steps of developing a successful product.

What's next for Mental Link

The prototype we built is basic application that includes some features we would like to see. If given the option, we would add more features that reduce the number of potential bugs, as well as features that would allow this application to run successfully in a public environment. This potentially includes a vetting process for volunteers and a more customized plan for participants. Given the opportunity, running the application on a small test server would also be very beneficial.
