Inspiration
Despite the time-pressure, of getting started with "Devs Unleashed" late, we were determined to create a game that was something fun, something that can change the way we work and make it more enjoyable. We did brainstorm on interesting ideas using game engines to creating immersive virtual worlds.. In the end, we decided to go with "Connect Four-ge", the multiplayer game that takes the strategic and fun elements of Connect 4 and combines them with the power of the Atlassian Forge Platform. We are really excited to see how it would be received by the Atlassian community.
What it does
To get started, install the "Connect Four-ge", Forge application on the Jira cloud Instance.
Once the app is installed, you'll see the app icon in the Jira menu bar. Click on it to open the game and enjoy a well-deserved break. The system automatically creates the teams and matchups for you.
Now let the games begin!
During each turn, the game engine assigns you activities in Jira, such as adding a comment, creating a work log, etc. Do these tasks to unlock your token and play.
The first player to get four of their tokens in a row horizontally, vertically, or diagonally wins the game and climbs up the leaderboard.
- With colourful graphics, friendly competition, and rewards for top performers, our game for Jira is sure to be a hit with teams of all sizes. Plus, it's fully integrated with Jira, so you can track your progress and collaborate with your teammates within the same platform.
How we built it
We have built the App on Forge platform using Custom UI, Jira REST APIs and custom React components
Challenges we ran into
Being a new platform, Forge was indeed a challenge for us to work on during a short period. Some known issues which we ran into.
- Support for Forge extension for Bitbucket.
- Currently there is a limitation of Forge app requiring separate installation on each of the products
Accomplishments that we're proud of
With a team new to Forge and game development, we are proud of our very first game developed on the Atlassian Forge platform.
What we learned
We have become very familiar with the Forge platform, its features, and its current limitations in a very short period during this exercise.
Posting on the Forge Community is a good way to get issues resolved. Atlassian team & others are quick to share their experience & resolve the issues faced
Currently there is a limitation of Forge app requiring separate installation on each of the products
What's next for Connect-Four-ge
Given the short time, we have come up with a working concept.. However there are lot of edges especially on the UX & game rules which needs to be polished and tested for edge cases
Currently the game engine is tuned to work with Jira Software. We would like to integrate the game engine to other Atlassian products such as Confluence & Bitbucket.
