Inspiration
Living in a suburban neighborhood, I grew frustrated with the disconnect between the food on my plate and the hands that grew it. Grocery store produce often traveled hundreds of miles, losing freshness and disempowering local farmers. I wanted to create a space where health-focused people like me could connect directly with farmers—cutting out middlemen, supporting sustainability, and enjoying truly fresh, seasonal food. That’s how LocalFarm Connect was born.
What it does
LocalFarm Connect is a web platform linking North American and European consumers with local farmers. Users discover nearby farms via location filters, customize weekly CSA boxes (small/medium/family tiers, dietary preferences), choose delivery/pickup, and manage subscriptions. Farmers get tools to track inventory, fulfill orders, and share their stories—building trust with the community.
How we built it
We started with mapping core user needs (consumer access to fresh produce, farmer direct sales) and structured the platform’s pages (landing, farm discovery, subscription flow, dashboards). We built the frontend with React for responsive design, backend with Node.js/Express, and used PostgreSQL for inventory/order data. We integrated Stripe for payments, Google Maps for location filtering, and SendGrid for email alerts—testing each feature against real user scenarios (e.g., zip code validation, subscription pausing).
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was balancing flexibility (customizable CSA boxes) with operational feasibility for farmers—we had to set clear rules (48hr customization cutoff) to avoid inventory chaos. We also struggled with map radius accuracy (ensuring farms within 25/30-mile ranges displayed correctly) and payment processing edge cases (failed payments, refund timelines). Additionally, validating user reviews (tying them to verified orders) required complex order-tracking logic.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a seamless subscription flow that lets users swap seasonal items, skip weeks, or pause subscriptions—all while giving farmers real-time inventory control. The platform’s seasonal calendar (color-coded harvest indicators) became a fan favorite, and we successfully integrated 8% platform fee logic without disrupting user/farmer experience. Most importantly, beta testing with local farmers showed 90% satisfaction with order management tools.
What we learned
We learned the importance of centering farmer needs—their feedback reshaped the dashboard (simpler inventory updates, clear analytics). We also mastered balancing user experience with business rules (e.g., delivery radius limits, minimum order values) and gained expertise in PCI DSS-compliant payment processing. Most crucially, we saw how technology can strengthen local food systems—connecting people beyond transactions.
What's next for this project
We plan to expand beyond English (starting with Spanish/French for European/North American users), add a simplified mobile web experience (prior to native apps), and test wholesale options for small cafes. We also want to build a sustainability metrics tool (carbon footprint of CSA boxes) and a referral program to grow farmer/consumer communities. Finally, we’ll integrate real-time chat for farmers and customers to streamline communication.
