Headline Our project was a policy and research based solution submitted to the COVITECH Hackathon:

One of the problems we chose to address was: Use technology (digital or otherwise) to create a solution that helps recruit unemployed people who lost their jobs due to the pandemic.

Overall, we chose to submit two proposals one named Connect Business and the other named Connect P. Connect P focused on connecting individuals with one another to encourage social interactions. Prisha advanced the ideas of Connect P whilst I developed and worked on the ideas for Connect Business (this project).

Why did you choose the above problem?

We chose to solve the above problem because of our understanding of the mass economic loss due to the coronavirus pandemic. Furthermore, we understood that since many businesses have suffered losses, the unemployment rate has significantly decreased with individuals unsure of where to take their skill set too. Moreover, the virus has increased the difficulty of gaining access to education for many. Additionally, during this time it is perceived there are large risks involved with continuing to run small businesses and opening startups. As a result, it was our goal to provide a resource that was able to help a variety of individuals within the professional world all in one place.

What inspired you to build this solution?

We were inspired to build this solution by much of our research in the past about the effect of COVID-19 on the global economy. For example, it is known that large businesses such as Wells Fargo (using cryptocurrency), Amazon (through the need of ecommerce), and other companies were able to sustain because of their size and rapid income. However, small businesses which were recently started or struggling to thrive were shut down. On the contrary, it is not just a “location” which was forced to shut down but also the passions of the owners. Furthermore, many were forced to pause their educational dreams such as pursuing research opportunities or finishing college. As a result, it was our goal to appeal to every individual and group as well as their personal situations.

How did you build your solution?

We are planning to develop a website or an app based application which will allow for the use of users across the globe. I had begun to map out a plan of our application in HTML 5, but unfortunately due to time constraints was not able to finish or submit the product. After creating a profile, individuals will be able to build resumes, connect with one another, and reach out to gain resources. Furthermore, they will be able to book sessions with instructors for crucial lessons such as the basics of JAVA or Python. Moreover, through this application they will have the opportunity for services such as “office hours” where they can meet with teachers for a short period of time one on one to clear any doubts. Moreover, we plan to have a separate space where those interested in growing their companies or developing startups can meet with mentors or investors.

What does your solution do and how does it solve the problem you chose?

Our solution is an all inclusive application which focuses on three components, The Workplace, Enterprise and Business Start-Up Opportunities, and The Education. The Workplace allows for individuals to connect and reach out to companies aligning with their skill sets and interests for job applications or internships. Furthermore, this allows for users to connect with one another and share their skills in order to make meaningful connections. The Enterprise and Business Start-Up Opportunities allow for users to take their ideas and turn them into a profitable income. Moreover, it ensures for the growth of current free standing companies to continue pushing through the challenges the Covid-19 Pandemic brought. Additionally, the final component of our project was The Education which represented the easy efficient access to training courses in order to expand current certifications.
