I embarked on this AR journey with a simple yet nostalgic vision: to transform a beloved childhood game into an immersive digital experience. Join me in exploring my creation, a reimagined version of Connect 4 brought to life in the world of Augmented Reality.
Inspiration
I wanted to create a game in AR. During the brainstorm sessions with 8th wall team, I wanted to go simple with my first 8th wall project and choose one of the childhood games that I've grown up playing.
What it does
Two players take turns dropping coins onto the board, aiming to form sequences of four of their coins to win the game.
How I built it
I began by meticulously crafting the game mechanics, and as they took shape, I seamlessly integrated them with Shared AR technology. Through rigorous testing and iterative refinement, I polished the user interface, enhanced the overall user experience, and fine-tuned gameplay. To further elevate the experience, I integrated sound effects and Ingress assets to represent the two competing teams. Additionally, I harnessed the power of Firebase to store and track each team's total wins.
Challenges I ran into
Taking on this project as a solo developer presented its own set of challenges, especially as it marked my maiden voyage into the world of 8th Wall. Overcoming the learning curve, I delved into Blender to modify models and textures to suit my vision. I also navigated the complexities of physics within A-frame, a new experience for me. While I successfully implemented VPS, time constraints hindered my ability to scale and position assets optimally.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I take pride in the fact that I single-handedly brought this project to life. My proficiency grew significantly as I mastered tools like Blender, conquered physics challenges in A-frame, and successfully implemented Shared AR mechanisms and Firebase integration.
What I learned
This journey has taught me valuable lessons in project planning and adaptability. I've learned to better visualize project timelines and, equally important, to adapt gracefully when faced with unexpected obstacles.
What's next for Connect 4
The future of Connect 4 in AR holds exciting possibilities. I aim to further integrate VPS to create a diverse range of wayspots, each hosting its own leaderboard. But that's not all—my vision extends to refining the visual aspects of the game. I intend to fine-tune the 3D assets I've utilized, ensuring they are both visually stunning and seamlessly integrated into the AR environment. Expect to see enhanced graphics, animations that bring the game to life, and an overall smoother and more immersive user experience. My ultimate goal is to make this AR version of Connect 4 not just easy to play but also a truly wonderful and captivating experience for all who engage with it.
