Inspiration
The recent decline in Junior EQAO Math scores concerns us as we feel that the knowledge and thinking involved in maths are important skills to develop. We decided that a group form of learning, inspired by web apps like Waterloo's very own Learn and the popular flash quiz website Kahoot would be beneficial.
What it does
For teachers, it's an easy way for them to keep track of their student's math progress relative to EQAO and curriculum standards throughout the term or year preceding the EQAO. Every couple of months the teachers can run the diagnostic quizzes online, where the scores are recorded according to the five criteria corresponding to the Ontario curriculum. For students, it's simple. They simply click on the Test that the teachers make available for them and write the diagnostic during lab time.
How we built it
- built a server and database using PHP and MySQL for the first time
- developed a website using HTML and CSS3 styles
Challenges we ran into
- setting up a server and database for the first time
- linking the front end to the back end - namely passing information from JavaScript (information with student quiz scores) to PHP (to store the scores in the database).
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- functioning website
What we learned
- it's good to have a backup plan
What's next for Congenious
We hope that teachers can upload their class lists from an Excel document, streamlining the registration process with the inclusion of the students' unique Ontario Education Number. In addition, we hope that their records and progress will remain stored for the duration they remain in school on a secure, local database.
