Inspiration
Puberty can be a rollercoaster of emotions, hormones, and confusion. As women, we remember what it was like navigating this difficult time, asking ourselves questions about our changing bodies. While we both had supportive, open, and understanding females figures in our lives to ask questions to, we realize not everyone has that resource or feels comfortable having those conversations. We discussed our first gynecologist visits and laughed over our nerves and questions. This conversation was comforting since we were able to address an awkward topic in a non-judgemental setting. This sparked our idea for further opening the conversation around women's health for young girls.
What it does
Our team created a website called Confidant to open the conversation and destigmatize women’s health topics, particularly for young girls. Women can go for help them understand new responsibilities that come with caring for your body during the tumultuous time that is puberty. We covered issues such as getting your first period, choosing your first bra, and scheduling your first gynecology visit.
How we built it
We built this website from scratch, using mostly HTML, CSS, and javascript, with a dash of bootstrap for spice. We also created a sleek logo with Canva.
Challenges we ran into
It has been a while since either of us attempted to make a website. There were time constraints on how fancy we could make our functionalities. We still tried to make it as engaging as we could. This week was also an exam week for both of us so this limited our time to work on the project and hours of sleep. Furthermore, there are only two of us so (wo)manpower was limited!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We finished the website! Not to mention did we complete this product in the limited time we had, but we gained significant experience. We are both more confident in CSS, and HTML, and can now say we've dabbled in bootstrap as well.
What we learned
We learned more about each other's experiences regarding some women's health issues. We also talked to a gynecologist while compiling our answers to frequently as questions. She provided a lot of insight surrounding these topics. For instance, she told us about what information you should know before your gynecologist appointment, more details about various exams, and information about female anatomy including the hymen.
What's next for Confidant
We'd love to expand on what we've created during this hackathon by including more topics such as body hair, sex, consent, mental health. We would also like to make our content more engaging by including videos and slideshows, and compile more anonymous stories to display. We hope to talk to both young women about their experiences and their concerns, as well as more health professionals to curate more answers for the site.
