Inspiration
The idea for this project grew out of our work with COMSA, a direct-trade coffee initiative representing 1,240 farmers in Honduras. Too often, people enjoy coffee without ever knowing the farmers, communities, or impact behind each cup.
We wanted to change that. The inspiration was to create a tool that makes the coffee journey interactive, educational, and personal, while also giving people a chance to directly support farmers through in-app coffee purchases.
What We Learned
Education and commerce can work together: People are more willing to support sustainable coffee if they understand its story.
Interactivity matters: Education becomes engaging when users can explore, quiz themselves, and unlock stories.
Global + Local Impact: Connecting Honduran farmers with U.S. coffee drinkers builds community across borders.
How We Built It
Research – We mapped the coffee process from farming to roasting to retail.
Design – The app was structured as a learning journey, with lessons and interactive quizzes.
Integration – Added in-app purchasing so users can order COMSA coffee directly.
Testing – Feedback showed people valued both the knowledge and the chance to support farmers.
Challenges
Balancing authenticity and sales was one of the hardest parts. We didn’t want the app to feel like a store — it had to feel like a true learning tool.
Other challenges included:
Technical hurdles with secure, seamless in-app payments
Condensing thousands of farmers’ stories into simple, authentic content
