Inspiration:
I drew inspiration from looking at newer parts of the university and making something that aligns in style with them. I also thought back to “My Setup ”YouTube videos and sprinkled some of those ideas Into the design (Such as the L-shaped dual monitor setup). I was also watching some videos on YouTube of some world renowned designers.
“The room should firstly belong the place it’s in” ~ Axel Vevoordt.
I incorporated grays, blues and and dark greens into the room because of that advice. Calgary is pretty much a concrete jungle with gray buildings being juxtaposed with the blue sky behind them. During the winter the only colours you see apart from the white snow, blue sky and grey concrete is the dark green of pine trees.
What it does
The primary focus of my iteration was firstly to modernize the room, I did that by replacing the lots of Walls with glass panels and by the lights being projected onto the walls. The other important focus of Mine while updating the lab was to make it much more ergonomic. Currently, the lab has terrible keyboards, mice and seats; all of which I updated in my iteration. A programmer pretty much spends all their time sitting down and typing on a keyboard. I did my best to make that as pleasant of an experience as possible. I also did my best to keep a sense of productivity in the room. The glass walls will keep all the other students working hard visible, this in turn will subconsciously keep other students focused too.
How I built it
I created the images using an iPad and Apple Pencil. The app I used was Autodesk Sketchbook.
Challenges I ran into
There a two main challenges I faced. Firstly, the time I had to make these images was very limited in comparison to how much I would have liked as I also had to keep up with rest of my school assignments. Secondly, I have limited art skills, so I had to spend a lot of time making my images recognizable. The images still lack a sense of artistic stylization, which can really only be added as a gain more experience.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Staying committed throughout the production of these images is my greatest accomplishment in terms of this project. The production of the drawings, although it might not look like, took over 22 hours of work in total. Many times I wanted to leave the project as it required so much patience out of me. So it was very satisfying to able to see the completed product.
What I learned
I learned that I really enjoy the process of designing and am now hoping to do more with it in my life which is something I did not expect. I got much more proficient at drawing on the iPad throughout the completion of this project as it’s a new tool for me.
What's next for Computer Science Lab Redesign
I consider my part in this project mostly complete. Now rests the university’s job in creating a lab that the students enjoy using!
