What is the problem your solution addresses?

After completing preliminary research, we understood that there are many people who are self motivated to start compositing but don’t have a comprehensive and readily available resource. Due to this, the best way to address this problem and advocate for sustainability was to create a space for these individuals to grow in their composting proficiency while actively starting the process. Composting is a form of sustainability as the user is essentially creating an organic material that can be added to soil to help their plants grow. The materials that are used in composting currently make up more than 30% of what an average person throws away. In a landfill, these materials will take up space and release methane, a powerful greenhouse gas which depletes the ozone layer of our atmosphere. One of the best ways to fight for sustainability from the comfort of your own home is by composting!

Why did you pick this solution, and how does it address the problem?

We decided the best way to address our problem space was to create a space for these self motivated individuals to start their composting journey! Giving people the tools they need to get this process started helps users understand composting and not feel as overwhelmed by it. Composting, the act of recycling waste products to foster new growth, has been quickly gaining popularity due to the ever increasing overflow of trash that is created by each and every person. According to the EPA, the average person in the US creates around 1,789 pounds of trash per year. That means the US generates an average of around 589 billion pounds of trash per year, a figure that can be contained through composting. An educational composting mobile app, which helps new users start their composting journey, is the easiest way to feel empowered while slowing the ever-growing trash epidemic in America.

Inspiration

Many of our group members are interested in composting but don't know where to start!

What it does

The mobile app has comprehensive instructions on caring for your own compost, learning where you can take materials, and tracking your compost.

How we built it

We used Figma to build out interactivity!

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was how to fit so much information into a single mobile app.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Being able to create a comprehensive prototyped mobile app with interactivity in this short of a time period.

What we learned

We each learned a new prototyping tool/skill, and we learned how much consistent work also goes into composting!
