Inspiration

In many cities, obtaining building permits can be a challenging, time-consuming, and confusing process. Regulations differ by location, and navigating complex building codes often requires significant time, effort, and technical understanding. We believe that everyone deserves easy access to building and zoning information, regardless of their expertise or resources. Our vision is to make construction accessible, empowering homeowners, contractors, and developers to navigate regulatory requirements seamlessly. With Compllama, we aim to bridge the gap between people and the permit process, making building accessible for everyone, everywhere.

What it does

Compllama is a chatbot-powered platform that simplifies the building permit process. It provides users with clear, accurate information on building codes, permit requirements, and regulatory compliance, tailored to their specific location. Users can ask questions about their construction projects and receive instant, easy-to-understand guidance on next steps, documentation, and code requirements. The chatbot demystifies complex regulations and connects users with resources for further assistance, making the process as straightforward as possible. Whether you're a contractor, homeowner, or real estate developer, Compllama helps you understand and obtain the permits you need to bring your projects to life.

How we built it

For the demo, we selected two data sources—Municode and CampbellCA. We then used Restack to orchestrate the workflow and Llama Stack with Llama for efficient data retrieval.

Challenges we ran into

Parsing and aligning building codes from different sources was challenging due to variations in structure and terminology. We had to ensure consistent interpretation to provide users with accurate, easy-to-understand information.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully parsed two data sources and made the information easily accessible for users. This achievement simplifies the permit process, allowing users to quickly find and understand complex regulatory requirements.

What we learned

This project taught us the importance of user-centred design when addressing complex problems. We learned how critical it is to break down intricate information into manageable, digestible pieces for our users. Through testing, we gained insights into user needs and refined our chatbot to be even more intuitive and responsive. We also learned the value of cross-functional collaboration—working with experts in construction, regulatory compliance, and technology helped us build a more robust solution. Finally, we deepened our understanding of data privacy best practices, ensuring our solution is both useful and safe for our users.

What's next for Compllama

The future for Compllama involves scaling up and refining our platform to serve even more regions. We plan to expand to additional U.S. cities, targeting high-density areas where regulatory complexity is greater. Beyond geographic growth, we aim to integrate Compllama with other project management and construction tools, creating a seamless workflow for users managing complex projects. We also plan to incorporate more advanced NLP and AI capabilities, making the chatbot smarter and more efficient at interpreting user queries. Finally, we’re excited to explore partnerships with municipal governments to make Compllama a trusted resource for regulatory compliance and accessibility.
