Inspiration

As a small business advisor, I saw countless owners overwhelmed by complex, ever-changing regulations—especially those without in-house legal teams. Many missed deadlines or misinterpreted rules, facing avoidable risks. I wanted to build a tool that demystifies compliance, making it accessible to small businesses in regulated sectors like food service and healthcare.

What it does

ComplianceBot automates regulatory monitoring, translates dense rules into plain language, tracks filing deadlines, and offers customizable document templates—all tailored to a business’s industry (e.g., construction) and jurisdiction (U.S. states/EU countries). It also calculates compliance risk levels and sends timely in-app reminders to keep businesses on track.

How we built it

We started by mapping core user needs (e.g., easy jurisdiction/industry selection) and designing a streamlined onboarding flow. Using React for the frontend and Node.js for the backend, we built a card-based UI with clear status indicators. We integrated PostgreSQL to store user profiles and compliance tasks, and leveraged AWS for scalable hosting. The risk calculation logic was coded to factor in overdue tasks and high-impact regulatory changes.

Challenges we ran into

One big hurdle was filtering regulatory data to only show updates relevant to a user’s specific industry/jurisdiction—we had to refine our data mapping to avoid overwhelming users with irrelevant info. We also struggled to balance simplicity with comprehensiveness: ensuring the tool was easy to use but still covered all critical compliance requirements for diverse sectors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a tool that turns overwhelming compliance into manageable tasks—users can see their risk level at a glance, access plain-language regulatory summaries, and complete tasks with one-click template access. The intuitive dashboard now gives small business owners a clear, actionable view of their compliance status, no legal expertise required.

What we learned

We learned how critical user-centric design is for niche tools—small business owners need clarity above all, so we stripped out jargon and focused on visual cues (e.g., color-coded deadlines). We also gained insight into cross-jurisdictional compliance nuances, especially between U.S. and EU regulatory frameworks.

What's next for this project

We plan to expand support for more regulatory bodies and refine the risk assessment model to include industry-specific nuances. We’re also exploring integrations with popular business tools to embed compliance reminders directly into daily workflows, and adding more customizable template options for niche compliance needs.
