Inspiration

At one of the most stressful moments of buying a home, a buyer may be asked to transfer a life-changing amount of money. The request can look routine: it may appear in an expected email chain, use the solicitor’s name and arrive with urgency.

The pain is that the buyer must recognise a possible fraud attempt while also trying not to delay their purchase. The simple protective action—stop and independently call the solicitor—is easy to forget or skip.

Completia Safe Transfer Reminder makes that action a small safety routine before a payment request ever arrives.

Why this safeguard is needed

In 2025, UK Finance recorded 248,070 authorised push payment fraud cases, with £576.4 million lost. These scams work by persuading a person to make a payment themselves. UK Finance Annual Fraud Report 2026

For property transactions specifically, the Law Society warns clients to obtain bank details directly from the law firm and check them using the firm’s published telephone number. Law Society: payment diversion fraud

What it does

At first use, the buyer saves their solicitor’s official switchboard number in Completia. They must find it independently from the firm’s website, regulator directory or original client-care pack—not from a payment request.

Saving the number triggers one opt-in CALL-E safety call to the buyer’s verified mobile number. The call explains that Completia will never give bank details or ask for money.

If the buyer later receives any request for funds, Completia reminds them to ignore contact details in that request and call their saved solicitor number themselves to confirm that the request and bank details are genuine.

The project does not store bank details, make transfers, call the solicitor, or decide whether a payment is safe.

How we built it

Completia previously existed as a property-transaction app. During this submission period, I am adding a buyer-only Money Safety setup: local storage for an independently sourced solicitor number, a buyer-triggered CALL-E safety call, and a permanent pre-transfer reminder. This fraud-safety functionality was not part of the earlier app and never stores bank details or contacts the solicitor.

The buyer’s saved solicitor number is kept locally on their own device and is not shown to the seller, estate agent or solicitor. CALL-E is used only for the buyer-requested setup call. The call uses a fixed safety script with no bank, property or account information.

The first demonstrator will show the complete flow: saving a number, receiving the CALL-E warning, then seeing the pre-transfer safety reminder.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge is that a fraud-safety tool must not become another channel that buyers are taught to trust blindly.

For that reason, the call happens only immediately after the buyer has chosen it. It never gives a phone number, account number, payment instruction or link. The buyer must make the real verification call themselves using the number they saved before any payment request arrived.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of defining a narrow safety boundary rather than claiming to “verify” bank details.

The product gives buyers a clear action they can take themselves at a stressful moment, while leaving money, legal advice and payment confirmation with the buyer, bank and solicitor.

What we learned

Client-care information is often provided at the start of a matter, but it can be long and easily forgotten. A short, timely safety routine may help buyers remember the one action that matters: independently call their solicitor before transferring funds.

We also learned that a safer system does not need to collect more sensitive information. The trusted contact route can be prepared early without storing banking data.

What's next for Completia Safe Transfer Reminder

Next, we will complete the CALL-E integration, test the wording with buyers and conveyancing professionals, and measure whether users understand the safety rule after the call.

A later version could let a regulated firm provide a verified official contact card through a formal integration. Until then, the buyer remains responsible for finding and saving the firm’s official number independently

Updates

posted an update —

Completia now includes a one-off CALL‑E safety reminder for buyers before a possible funds request.

The buyer saves the solicitor contact they already trust, then actively requests the call. The reminder is deliberately narrow: independently confirm the request through that trusted contact. Completia does not store bank details or verify payment instructions.

The live CALL‑E demo and project submission are now complete.
