Inspiration
This challenge was something completely new for all three of us, unlike any other design challenge we had done before. It pushed us to think differently and explore unfamiliar ideas around space systems and impact protection.
How We Built It
We built the project using SolidWorks and Autodesk Inventor. We focused on meeting the challenge constraints and creating a clear concept that could be demonstrated through CAD and 3D-printed parts.
Challenges We Faced
- Understanding how lattice structures respond to real impact conditions
- Choosing lattice geometries that balance stiffness and deformation
- Translating theoretical energy absorption into a practical design
- Adapting lattice concepts to a space sample return scenario
What We Learned
- How lattice structures can be tuned to manage impact forces
- Why deformation behavior is critical for protecting sensitive payloads
- How passive structural design can replace more complex systems
- How to connect physical principles to real engineering decisions
Built With
- 3dprinting
- autodesk
- solidwork
