Elevator pitch: Companies lose their best knowledge in Slack threads, docs and people's heads, and employees rarely know what would actually get them promoted. Compass is a company brain built on HydraDB that connects three things no single person can see at once. Those are the outside market, the company's own code and goals, and each employee's strengths and growth areas.
What it does:
- Competitor tracking: follows four real AI coding companies (Cursor, Cognition, GitHub Copilot, Replit) through 85 checked public signals: product releases, acquisitions, funding, pricing changes and hiring patterns. It predicts each company's next moves, with confidence levels and cited sources, and spots patterns across the whole industry.
- "Time machine" check: it predicts using only signals from before a cutoff date, then reveals what the competitor actually announced, which shows the predictions hold up.
- Strategy: it compares those moves with our fictional company Forgeline's own code and roadmap, finds the gap (for example, "our coding agent has no persistent memory"), and drafts the code change.
- Learns from decisions: an accepted recommendation becomes a new company priority and is written back into the brain.
- Promotion coach: for any employee, it lines up the next level's requirements with company goals, important work nobody owns yet, what their manager is measured on, and their own review history. It returns a ranked promotion plan, people to talk to, and a 90-day plan, with every claim linked to its source.
- Live talk memory: it includes today's keynote, so the brain can cite the exact moment a speaker said something.# Inspiration
How we built it:
- Memory: HydraDB holds shared company knowledge, market signals and per-employee memory collections. A hand-defined connection graph links each competitor signal to the capability it points to, the roadmap item it threatens, the code, the goal, and finally the person. Hybrid search with the graph turned on returns the reasoning paths.
- Reasoning: Claude writes the strategy recommendations and promotion plans from HydraDB's results.
- App: built on App-Starter (NestJS, Next.js, Postgres), with logins and roles, so employees and managers see different views.
- Data: competitor signals were researched from public sources only, with no speculation about named individuals. Forgeline and its employees are fictional.
