Companion Connect: Fighting Loneliness with AI and Heart

Inspiration

I built Companion Connect because I’ve been there.

There were times when I felt completely alone—even when I was surrounded by people. It wasn’t just about being isolated physically. It was that sinking feeling that no one really saw me or understood what I was going through.

At first, I kept it to myself. But I started to notice that so many others—especially teens—were feeling the same way. And no one was talking about it. That’s what hit me the hardest.

I wanted to create something that could say:

“Hey, I see you. You matter. You’re not alone.”

That was the beginning of Companion Connect.

What I Learned

This journey taught me more than any textbook ever could:

  • Loneliness is incredibly common, but people are afraid to admit it.
  • Emotional safety is everything. Without it, real connection doesn’t happen.
  • You can use AI in a way that feels human—kind, gentle, even healing.
  • It’s possible to build tech that isn’t about addiction or attention—but about support.

How I Built It

Companion Connect has two main parts:

1. Peer Support Network (in development)

  • A space for people to talk openly—without judgment
  • Trained teen volunteers who really listen
  • Anonymous options for safety and comfort
  • Topics from school stress to friendships to mental health

2. AI-Powered Affirmation App (available on web and App Store)

  • Daily check-ins and emotional support
  • Personalized affirmations powered by GPT
  • Built with Unity and Google Apps Script
  • Offline support, private by default

We also built an Instagram (@companion_connect_team) to reach more people in a way that feels natural and positive.

Challenges I Faced

There were a lot of bumps in the road.

  • Talking about loneliness was hard. Even naming the problem felt risky.
  • Making AI sound warm took hours of prompt tweaking and testing.
  • Recruiting volunteers was tricky—everyone’s busy, so I had to design roles that were flexible but still meaningful.
  • App development was a technical challenge, especially with Unity’s mobile limitations and handling notifications.

Still, every obstacle reminded me why I started. And that kept me going.

What’s Next

  • Launch the Companion Connect app (beta version soon!)
  • Grow the peer support network in schools and communities
  • Add features like visual journaling and gratitude logs
  • Partner with teen wellness groups and nonprofits

Companion Connect is more than a project. It’s personal.
It’s for anyone who’s ever felt invisible. For anyone who’s ever said,
“I just wish someone understood.”

If that’s you, I built this for you.

You’re not alone. Not anymore.
