Inspiration
We’ve always been very passionate about the environment, specifically sustainable fashion. We buy second-hand or make our own clothes. However, we hadn’t heard about the effects the fashion industry has on water consumption. After doing some research we found that the fashion industry uses 93 billion cubic meters of water annually.
What it does
Compact Closet is a mobile app that gives users a variety of sustainable features and tools. These include a virtual wardrobe, a clothing consumption profile, a sustainability knowledge base, a clothing label scanner and clothing tracking and planning features.
We incorporated artificial intelligence throughout our features, such as using image recognition within our tracking service to identify clothing pieces through users' photos. Additionally within our planning feature, we have our visual outfit suggestion, which creates outfit ideas based on users virtual wardrobe using AI art generators.
How we built it
Rhea created our mock design through Procreate. Amisha built our slide deck and our interactive phone feature through Canva. Throughout our designing process we prioritized simplicity, sustainability and accessibility in our work.
Challenges we ran into
Both members of our team are high school students, Amisha is in Grade 11 and Rhea is in Grade 9. Due to our ages we have limited computer science knowledge and experience compared to other hackers. This limited our ability to code aspects of Compact Closet for ElleHacks.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of being able to create an in depth mock design of Compact Closet and present a pitch to judges, given our time and experience. We also researched the different types of technologies available to support the app, including artificial intelligence, image recognition, as well as learning to use Procreate and Canva.
What we learned
We deepened our understanding on the issues involved with the fashion industry, such as the high consumption of water used in clothing production as well the high amount of toxins released into the water. In our time at ElleHacks we were introduced to new resources like Figma and Procreate, which helped us bring our vision to life. It was so inspiring to see all the women interested in computer science participating in ElleHacks, and to be surrounded by such a supportive and learning community.
What's next for Compact Closet
In the future, we hope for Compact Closet to be a fully coded app using all the features we mentioned in our plan such as virtual recognition and AI suggestions. Another innovation we wish to include is growing our accessibility features. Currently we have different methods for adding in data, consistent layouts and colour contrast throughout all pages, however we feel there are still improvements to be made. Alongside our design we hope to continue spreading awareness on the effect fashion has on water consumption.
