Flattening the curve with Carpooling in comparison to other transportation methods
Inspiration
https://wapo.st/3aSEOoN We are amazed by how seriously contagious the virus is, as explained in this article based on research by John Hopkins University https://wapo.st/2U788lL
We noticed the daily actions that can cause wide spreading of the virus, two of those actions are using transportation and engaging with people in their work. Working from home is the best option to remove those two huge risks. But not all businesses and services can afford to do that.
So we choose our research topic to be “ Containing Corona Outbreaks by Reducing Infection in Transportation” And the reasons behind our emphasis on such topic are: the high number of people in a confined space, the lack of possible control measures to identify and limit the access of potentially contaminated people. the exposure to common surfaces during the trip.
What it does
Reducing the possibility of getting infected from public transportation to less than 1%. We are working on the idea of the transport of the individuals who go to their workplaces daily to carpool together but upon certain conditions which are; moving with the same small group (from 2-3) in the same vehicle. This will drastically reduce the possibility of infection of people compared to their exposure to numerous individuals in public transportation, or having a direct contact with the surfaces which many have touched before.
Also we can use the data to:
- Warn the commuters about potential unsafe destinations by marking the places with confirmed cases as red flagged.
- Exclude from our active commuters network any individual suspected for infection, for example people living in areas with confirmed cases,by pausing their accounts for 10 days; enough time for symptoms to appear.
How we built it
We already had a commute carpooling app so we are adding these features to our already existing platform. The feature tackles: Awareness, Avoidance, Reporting, Detection, Elimination as explained below
The first safety feature is recommending the user to carpool with the same person every day instead of different people to reduce the possibility of infection.
Second, To warn the carpoolers about potential unsafe destinations by marking the places with confirmed cases as red flagged.
Third, To exclude from our active carpooling network any individual suspected for infection, for example people living in areas with confirmed cases, by pausing their accounts for 10 days; enough time for symptoms to appear.
Fourth, integrating our app with a chatbot to help users perform “infection self checkup”, where they can report their symptoms and know whether it’s suspected to be a COVID-19 infection or not. Then to guide them to the nearest hospitals providing checkups.
Fifth, If -God Forbid- a user reported feeling sick, all the users who carpooled with him or coming from the same company are notified to take their precautions and seek medical help as needed. And their accounts will be paused until cleared to ensure the safety of all other users.
Sixth, Users can find easily -based on their current location, the nearest pharmacies to stock up with sanitizers, masks & disinfectants.
Challenges we ran into
Getting exact data about locations where patients with covid 19 were detected from the government in Egypt.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We won the local hackathon for Fighting Covid19 We won 2nd best mobile startup worldwide in Mobile World Congress We won Cartier Initiative Awards for our region
What we learned
This is a basic mathematical simulation for the how contiguous each type of transportation https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bj5ZHqFJfat2C9Si4ms4PYqc1uSjPs2CQUDAT9YCqNY/edit We learned that carpooling with the same person everyday is the safest option for all of us
