Inspiration
Being freshmen in college, we walk a lot. Living in the farthest dorm from campus, we walk even more. At some point, it's too much walking for any regular person, so we had to find another solution. We tried bikes, scooters, and skateboards, but carrying them around and managing them were just too much to handle. So we decided to make our own. CruisePack, the backpack with an integrated skateboard for transportation and open pockets for easy storage.
What it does
CruisePack looks like a normal backpack from the outside, but the skateboard can fold out of the bottom of the bag, onto the ground. The battery pack, which is located inside a separate pocket for easy access, is connected to the board, allowing for the using to use the remote control to coast along on the CruisePack. We also created a basic companion app, which offers a few useful functionalities, including crash notifications, emergency settings, location services, and remote locking.
How we built it
The process of building the CruisePack involved usage of a variety of materials, including aluminum posts, many nuts and nails, the backpack, and the skateboard. We used the aluminum posts to create a frame within the backpack upon which we stored the divided skateboard. We created a latching system which, upon release, would allow the board to slide out of the backpack onto the ground, while aligning it with the rear half of the board.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into a few challenges on the implementation of the CruisePack, specifically on the sizing of our aluminum posts versus the frame of the board and the rest of the backpack. This meant we had to go back and be more accurate with our cuts, oftentimes cutting less than we had to and slowly cutting more until we had what we wanted.
What's next for CruisePack
We will remain in development until the point that mass production becomes feasible through some sort of standardized procedure. Until then, stay cool, and have fun cruisin' on the CruisePack!
