Jeepneys is one of the main transportation modes here in Davao City. From my personal experience and research, I've identified at least 52 unique jeepney routes. Being the largest city in the Philippines in terms of land area, all of these routes are used by davaoeƱos everyday.

Commuting with jeepneys can be difficult for tourists and even for locals. For tourists, there is a language barrier and they are foreign to the city. Locals on the other hand, even though they can communicate with the drivers and locals, familiarizing 52 routes is a tough job.

Whenever I commute to new places here in Davao City, I usually plan ahead by:

a. getting the jeepney route that fits our starting point or destination

b. find landmarks/places to embark and disembark the said jeepney

c. Ask locals or the jeepney drivers for directions

Familiarizing all routes is a hard thing to do, cause personally I only use a handful of routes that are part of my daily travel to work and leisure.

How about we equip our commuters with a 3d map tool, visualizing the routes passing through the buildings and common landmarks we often see?

Hence the creation of Commute Davao 3D, Powered by Google Maps Javascript 3D. Currently Commute Davao is a 2D map with jeepney routes drawn on top of it. This in itself works, but why not take it to the next level?

Why not render the map into a 3D with actual 3D buildings, helping commuters visualize the travel they will be expecting. We also support fly by of each jeepney routes, further visualizing the length of each routes, and which areas they touch.

With the looming jeepney modernization and Philippine's car-centric tendencies, I aim to approach these challenges in a unique way. By promoting public transportation, not only we preserve our jeepney culture, we also lessen our carbon footprint, and promote public transportation that is uniquely Filipino.
