๐ก Inspiration
We aimed to rethink disaster response systems as intelligent, real-time decision networks instead of static dashboards. Flood emergencies require speed, coordination, and clarityโyet most systems today are fragmented and reactive.
CommunityOS was created to unify these layers into a single AI-powered crisis intelligence platform.
โ๏ธ What it does
CommunityOS transforms live environmental and civic data into actionable emergency decisions by:
- Monitoring real-time weather and IoT sensor data
- Analyzing citizen reports with multimodal AI (Gemini 1.5)
- Running a coordinated 7-agent AI swarm for distributed reasoning
- Generating prioritized emergency response actions
- Enforcing human approval before execution (critical safety layer)
- Providing operational dashboards for command, mapping, fleet, and recruitment
๐ ๏ธ How we built it
We engineered a full-stack autonomous crisis OS using modern AI-first and cloud-native architecture:
- React + Vite frontend for real-time dashboards
- Node.js + Express backend for orchestration
- Gemini 1.5 Flash for AI reasoning and vision analysis
- Custom 7-agent swarm architecture for task decomposition
- JSON-based municipal simulation database
- Real-time weather API integration (Open-Meteo)
- CI/CD pipeline with GitHub Actions and Cloud Run deployment
๐ง Challenges we ran into
- Coordinating multi-agent AI behavior under real-time constraints
- Designing safe AI decision flows with human-in-the-loop approval
- Handling live external data while maintaining system determinism
- Building complex visualization systems without performance loss
๐ Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Implemented a working autonomous multi-agent crisis intelligence system
- Integrated real-world meteorological data into AI reasoning pipelines
- Built a human-in-the-loop governance layer for safety-critical decisions
- Designed a full operational crisis command interface with multiple dashboards
- Achieved a fully typed, production-grade full-stack architecture
๐ What we learned
- High-stakes AI systems require transparency, not just intelligence
- Multi-agent systems excel when responsibilities are strictly separated
- Real-world utility depends more on structured outputs than model complexity
- Human oversight is essential in any autonomous civic system
๐ What's next for CommunityOS
- Integration with real municipal and government datasets
- Expansion into satellite and geospatial flood prediction
- Mobile-first emergency alerting system for citizens
- Scaling the agent swarm into a multi-city coordination network
- Advanced simulation engine for disaster scenario forecasting
- Real-time IoT sensor streaming infrastructure
