Muslim Community Development track
Inspiration
We agreed that our community has a huge disparity between the younger and older generation when it comes to the usage of technology. However, Whatsapp is a service that goes beyond this gap and we thought we could utilize this fact to reconnect the community with itself (which is especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic).
What it does
We have a proposed website that allows Imams to make announcements and answer questions they receive via WhatsApp. We also have a portion of the website that responds and outputs results to Whatsapp. Users(i.e non-imams) can use Whatsapp to view annoucements, view local masjids in their area, view the masjid's announcements, and receive answers to their questions they ask through this service.
How we built it
The frontend team mainly used Boostrap whereas the backend team used Flask. We used the Twilio API for Whatsapp communication.
Challenges we ran into
- Communication
- Over-scoping
- Project fatigue
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Learning more about frontend tech and using it to make a good looking frontend.
- Learning more about Flask.
- Learning more about database/ORM usage.
- Getting the Whatsapp portion of the app to work.
