CommUnity - Platform for SHGs

Inspiration

We have seen that many people in rural India are unaware of the support and opportunities available to them. Self-Help Groups (SHGs) play a vital role in financial inclusion, particularly for women, and act as a stepping stone out of poverty. However, inefficiencies like fraudulent bookkeeping, poor data management, and limited market reach have hindered SHGs' potential. We were inspired to create a solution that overcomes these barriers and expands the support network for SHGs.

What it does

CommUnity is a platform built to support SHGs in India by offering a streamlined, transparent digital interface for all users, whether members, leaders, Village Administrative Officers, or public supporters. The platform enables:

Digital Bookkeeping: Simplifies record-keeping in regional languages and ensures data accuracy.
Expanded Market Reach: SHGs can showcase their products/services to a wider audience, reaching customers beyond local markets.
Public Fundraising: Unique feature allowing public investments, boosting resources for SHGs aiming for larger projects.
SMS Updates for Non-smartphone Users: Ensures inclusivity for users without smartphones, sending vital updates directly to their phones.
Enhanced SHG Collaboration: Fosters connections between SHGs and NGOs for resource sharing and collaborative projects.
Machine Learning for SHG Performance Scoring: ML algorithms assess the performance of SHGs based on transaction history, bookkeeping accuracy, and other financial indicators, giving investors confidence in supporting well-managed SHGs.
Personalized Marketplace Recommendations: Uses machine learning to help users discover relevant products and services.
Localized Data: Supports regional languages for posts and data, enhancing usability.

How we built it

User Interface: Designed with simplicity and accessibility in mind, including regional language support.
Machine Learning: Integrated to provide both SHG performance scores for potential investors and personalized marketplace recommendations.

SMS Integration: Configured to send updates to users who don’t own smartphones.

What we learned

We learned the significance of transparency and simplicity in financial platforms targeting rural populations. Understanding user pain points in SHGs’ financial management helped us craft solutions tailored to their unique needs. Localization and multilingual support turned out to be key in enhancing usability and inclusivity.
