What it does
To control the worldwide COVID-19 outbreak, we must successfully manipulate the basic reproduction number (R0) to any value below 1. This means limiting the viral rate of transmission from 1 infected individual to less than one other person.
If R0 is below 1, over time the outbreak will become contained. If above 1, it will grow.
According to recent work completed by University of Oxford researchers, due to the high rate of virality of the COVID-19-causing coronavirus during the pre-symptomatic phase of infection, in order to drive R0 below 1, we must have effectively instant contact-tracing capabilities.
