Inspiration

Most people living in California know or have been affected by a natural disaster. Surina, one of our team members, lived in a house that was home to anyone displaced from the 2020 wildfires, but once her house was evacuated, there was nowhere to go. Our mission is to connect people who need help with those who can give help after being impacted by a natural disaster. We envision communities that can rebuild stronger together while spreading core values of community, kindness, empathy, and local connection.

What it does

Community Relief is a community-centric approach to disaster relief through our connection algorithm. It pairs people's needs with skills present within a community through individuals and local businesses.

How we built it

Currently, Community Relief is mocked up through a website that makes local connection through phone communication. In the future, we hope to implement a phone app that has this algorithm matching service as well as individual feeds for people who need help, want to give help, and local resources.

Challenges we ran into

Throughout the design process we had so many ideas relating to climate change in this community, but finally decided on an idea we could actually build and make an impact with. Technical challenges we ran into were: figuring out how to integrate AWS Services (DynamoDB, SNS, Lambda, API Gateway) into an interactive WebApp, learning how to send data over the wire from the WebApp to the Backend, and developing a method of sending text messages to volunteers. Solving these challenges not only connected us to this project but also increased our knowledge of these programs used.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

An accomplishment we're proud of is learning and implementing a web app, as well as creating a real community centered idea.

What we learned

We learned so much about how communities are impacted through natural disasters in California, as well as what kinds of resources they need. We also learned all of this computer software during the process:)

What's next for Community Relief

Next up for Community Relief is a phone app that connects local people who need help and can give help based on their skills and needs. We also hope to implement feeds based on location and community involvement, as well as a call line for those without internet access.
