Inspiration

We noticed that many local problems — such as potholes, waste, unsafe areas, and unresolved civic issues — can affect people every day, yet residents often lack a simple way to report them, provide evidence, and track what happens afterward. We wanted to build something that turns citizens from passive observers into active contributors to their communities. This inspired us to create Community Hero AI.

What it does

Community Hero AI is a hyperlocal community platform that helps residents report, track, and respond to real problems in their area.

Residents can submit complaints using text or voice, attach photos or videos as evidence, and identify their local area or ward. A live community tracker allows users to follow issue statuses such as pending, assigned, and ground work in progress.

The platform also includes a Safety Hub with emergency and trusted-contact tools, along with Legal Mitra, an AI-powered assistant that helps users understand possible next steps when facing issues such as harassment or tenant disputes.

Our goal is to make local problems more visible, actionable, and trackable.

How we built it

We built Community Hero AI as a web-based platform combining modern web development with AI-powered features.

The platform includes resident registration and authentication, a community reporting console, multimedia evidence uploads, voice-based input, hyperlocal issue tracking, interactive dashboards, safety tools, and an AI-powered Legal Mitra assistant.

We focused on creating a simple workflow:

Report → Provide Evidence → Track → Take Action → Get Support

AI tools were also used during development for brainstorming, coding assistance, debugging, interface improvements, and developing AI-powered functionality. We reviewed and adapted the generated output to fit our project's requirements.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was bringing several community-focused features together without making the platform confusing for users. We needed to balance civic issue reporting, hyperlocal tracking, safety tools, and AI assistance within one consistent experience.

Another challenge was designing a reporting flow that was simple enough for anyone to use while still collecting useful information such as descriptions, locations, and multimedia evidence.

We also had to carefully design the AI features so that they provide useful guidance while clearly remaining an assistance tool rather than a replacement for official authorities or professional services.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of building a platform that goes beyond simply collecting complaints. Community Hero AI connects problem reporting with evidence, location-based tracking, safety support, and AI-powered assistance.

We are especially proud of the hyperlocal issue tracker, which gives residents visibility into what happens after a problem is reported. We also built voice-based reporting and multimedia evidence features to make reporting more accessible and practical.

Most importantly, we created a project around a real community problem rather than building technology without a clear purpose.

What we learned

We learned that building technology for communities requires more than adding features. The user journey has to be simple, understandable, and useful for people with different levels of technical experience.

We also learned how important it is to connect AI with a meaningful real-world workflow. AI is most useful when it helps users understand a problem, decide on possible next steps, or access information more easily.

The project also taught us to think about privacy, responsible AI use, accessibility, and the limitations of automated advice when building technology that can affect real people.

What's next for Community Hero AI — Your Hyperlocal Community Copilot

Our next goal is to make Community Hero AI more useful at the neighborhood level.

We plan to add smarter AI-based issue categorization, duplicate complaint detection, priority scoring, better location intelligence, community analytics, multilingual voice reporting, and stronger accessibility features.

We also want to develop dashboards that can help community organizations and local groups identify recurring problems and understand which issues require the most attention.

Ultimately, we want Community Hero AI to become a trusted digital layer between residents and their communities — helping people report problems, stay informed, find support, and participate in making their neighborhoods better.
