Inspiration

The project was inspired by how hard it is to find trusted helplines or nearby hospitals during emergencies quickly, and how many young people struggle with stress and anxiety without a safe, simple starting point for help. The goal was to create a calm “first step” where someone can call, reflect on their mood, or discover NGOs without feeling overwhelmed.

What it does

Provides emergency contacts (police, ambulance, women's helpline, mental health helpline) with one-tap call buttons. Let users track their daily mood and store it privately in their browser, as well as write anonymous positive notes for themselves or others. Shows a city-wise list of NGOs and a dynamic “Find Nearby Hospital” button using Google Maps search for the selected city.

How we built it

The app is built only with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, so it runs in any browser with no backend. The page has sections for emergency buttons, a daily mood tracker, city-wise NGO listings, and an anonymous note wall, with data like moods and notes saved privately in localStorage, and a city selector that updates NGOs and hospital search for each city.

Challenges we ran into

Key challenges were keeping the project beginner-friendly yet impactful, choosing reliable helplines/NGOs for different cities, and designing an interface that feels supportive, not overwhelming, in stressful moments.

What we learned

The project strengthened skills in using localStorage for private, persistent data, dynamic DOM updates for city-wise content, and user-centered design for sensitive topics like mental health and crises.

What's next for Community Help & Mental Wellness Hub

Next for the Community Help & Mental Wellness Hub is to add deeper wellness tools (breathing, journaling, gentle reminders), expand verified NGOs and hospitals to more cities with filters, and improve crisis support with clearer panic-flow and safety tips. Privacy-friendly analytics (city selections, helpline clicks, mood logs) can then show real impact, like how many people actually reach support or build consistent mental health habits.
