Inspiration

We are nutrition students with a passion for food insecurities and food justice. As nutrition students, we understand the need for equal access to nutrition-dense foods and also a battle we face in our own profession.

What it does

This project utilizes off-the-grid greenhouses, food pantries, and local farms to develop meal kits with recipes attached to them to deliver to low-income areas in rural communities. It is income based, but you can also afford it with SNAP/WIC.

How we built it

We came in with a bunch of ideas that were scrapped a bunch of times. We were challenged to think of every solution to this problem. We utilized the whiteboard, we did a bunch of research on what exactly rural areas struggled with and came up with direct solutions that were all interconnected.

Challenges we ran into

It was hard dealing with each idea we had get thrown out the window. It was hard staying up all night and being able to comprehend the project for 24 hours straight. We usually had the ideas, but coming up with the logistics and how it could remain sustained was the challenging part.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I think we're proud that we completed the project with material that we're proud of. We had ideas we loved and ideas we hated, and finding a topic that we were all passionate about and could build upon was key to a smoother process. The experience in general is what pushed us along.

What we learned

We learned that it takes much longer than 24 hours to solve food injustice and essentially world hunger. We found that it is an ongoing debate with a million solutions, and solving it in one night would put a bunch of people out of jobs.

What's next for Community Harvest

Implementing Community Harvest into more rural areas so they can fight their own food desert battles.
