Inspiration
For my first ever hackathon, I wanted to create something that was simple in design, yet was able to do a lot of people good. But how do I go about doing so? Promote small businesses? Get people to volunteer via community service? Show people local charities they can donate at? Well, why settle for one, when it can be all of the above!
What it does
Community Garden has one clear goal: provide an easy-to-navigate UI for people to find local small businesses to dine or shop at, or if they don't want to purchase anything, they can instead donate to local charities or volunteer. Community Garden searches for your selected entry based on your location and provides pop-up selections for their results, which link to the respective selection's website when clicked upon.
How we built it
Since UI was 90% of this project's focus, the entire app was built using the Figma interface and then imported into Bravo Studio to be exported as an .apk file. Figma was a blast to use, as it was simple for even a beginner like me to use, yet allowed me to make such beautiful interfaces and components for my app.
Challenges we ran into
It was tricky trying to figure out the logistics of how this app would work. What would count as a "small business"? Could users upload their own choices as well? What moderating system would need to be put in place? In the end, I was able to iron out these decisions and settled upon a system that utilized both user submissions and manual moderation for the best results.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The UI came out looking beautiful, and I was able to incorporate the links to each website per pop-up without a hitch!
What we learned
It's not easy making a quality app over a weekend! Yet, this was a fun experience, albeit fairly stressful, and taught me a good deal about how to create user interfaces and how to think critically about potential user interactions with my app.
What's next for Community Garden
Adding location services, user submissions, and dynamic backgrounds for screens!
