Inspiration

As a group of self-proclaimed food connoisseurs, we look to bring attention to smaller food businesses that not only are delicious, but don't have the marketing resources of a larger corporation. We want to support these business by making it easier for foodies to find them.

With short-burst, dopamine inducing media dominating the technological landscape, we wanted to create a website that takes advantage of that, eliminating the need for extensive research to find these places and handing them straight to potential consumers via elements inspired from matchmaking apps.

What it does

Given a set of criteria (craving, location, budget, and distance), our website algorithmically provides the user with smaller food businesses to visit. In order to make it more convenient for the user, the website also provides various ways to place the order, operating hours, and the address via hyperlinks.

In practice, small business would reach out (or we would outreach to small businesses we wish to support) in order to have them as a potential candidate in our showcase. We would review each case to ensure the platform maintains its integrity as a place for small businesses.

How we built it

The website itself (elements, design, etc.) were made with a combination of HTML, CSS, and drawing devices. The website is hosted by GitHub Pages. The algorithm used to determine which restaurant fits the user best, then displays the appropriate information, were all coded in JavaScript.

Challenges we ran into

Originally, we wanted to make the website a more randomly based generator, but felt it wouldn't be fair to both the user and the small business in question. In order to fix this, we began to move towards a more algorithmic approach, where designing a fair algorithm would both benefit the business while catering towards the user's interest more.

Looking to make a compromise to both making the UI practical, but intuitive to the users while keeping its original intention is a massive challenge we are currently addressing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As this our first hackathon + notable team project outside of the classroom, we're proud to have been able to distribute and create a working product!

What we learned

We learned how to make use of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS in combination to create a working website. We also learned how to properly distribute our work to ensure all important aspects of the project are covered.

What's next for Community Cravings

As we only have our own food preferences as of now, we wish to genuinely incorporate small business who are looking for support to put themselves out there. We also want to refine our algorithm to create a more catered experience to users.
