Inspiration

My inspiration was based upon my own experiences with donating my gently-used clothing items to school events for local organizations and also donating at local organizations. I also had a past donating experience for premie goodie bags for parents, which included new baby bibs, socks, and snacks for parents. It was difficult trying to find an organization that accepts these donations, so I wanted to build a platform for finding organizations that accept particular new or used item donations. This promotes sustainability, but also compassion and generosity towards those around you. Whether it's toys you once loved or furniture you no longer need, your gently-used items can find a second home and meet the needs of someone who may not have the resources to purchase their own.

What it does

Community Connect is a local donation platform that allows different organizations, charities, and shelters to connect with neighbors in the community who have items they would like to donate. This platform also promotes volunteering opportunities at different organizations, such as churches or nursing homes, and helps align volunteering opportunities based on a user's interests.

How we built it

I built the web platform using bolt.new, which involves JavaScript, React (a JS library), HTML, and CSS. I made minor edits within the code, such as adding additional styling (i.e., changing top, left values for animated icons, animal characteristics), and adding real organizations for real-world relevance and visibility. A disclaimer was added in the footer to clarify that the platform is not endorsed by or affiliated with any of the named organizations; these references are for demonstration purposes only.

Challenges we ran into

I do not have any experience with React, so I learned a bit as I went through the code provided and am currently learning basics of React through Codédex. Thankfully, my foundation in HTML and CSS helped me better understand how React works.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I've never used an AI web application generation tool before, so it was pretty interesting and fun to see how bolt.new works! This is also my first hackathon! :)

What we learned

I've gotten to know the basics of how a hackathon works, thinking through AI prompts, and gain familiarity with JavaScript's library, React. I will continue the course on React, and hope to integrate more features (if needed) to the website.

What's next for Community Connect

I'm still thinking about the future of Community Connect, but I plan to continue refining the website and improving the user experience wherever I can!
