Introduction

Community Connect is an app that has been created #ForThePeople #ByThePeople to make the world a better place for those who typically face mental, physical, emotional, and financial challenges accessing day-to-day support. This app aims to create an online support community where pre-pandemic we could go and access these services outside or ask in-person communities for help.

Inspiration

The inspiration came from the first-hand challenges faced by being children of immigrants and addressing information accessibility. As first-generation immigrants to Canada, we have had to assist others with a multitude of day-to-day tasks (both tech and non-tech) thus, we wanted to create a resource that our friends, family, and other people who face similar challenges can use to complete daily tasks.

How we built it

We built our project by creating a Figma wireframe and prototype, setting up a React boilerplate and reorganizing our project structure, and grouping components by their pages. Our Front-End consists of MUI, CSS, React; The Backend consists of NodeJs and Firebase built on PostgreSQL. We worked on presenting the idea in completion and plan to work on coding execution.

What we learned

Firstly, we learned that building a full-stack application within a 24-hour mark is difficult for new developers. Of the few project challenges due to the time constraints, was the feature implementation of Twilio and Auth0. Thus, we decided to prioritize our prototype and plan to build out the actual app in the future.

Secondly, through our market research, we have learned that the needs and challenges faced by those in marginalized communities are diverse, and between ourselves, quite common. Thus we see the importance of providing resources that are easily accessible in order for our communities to be successful and thrive.

What's next for Community Connect

We see the potential of this app as super beneficial and helpful in eliminating barriers. We hope to build out the features, add more features, incorporate testing, and build out this project in its entirety soon.
