Inspiration

Living in a suburban neighborhood, I noticed friends and neighbors struggling with bulk grocery waste (buying big packs only to toss unused food) and underused tools gathering dust. Local farmers also struggled to reach small-scale buyers. That’s when the idea for Community Buy & Share clicked—why not build a space to connect people, cut waste, and support local businesses?

What it does

It’s a web platform where neighbors join group buys for fresh produce/goods (split bulk costs), share tools/skills/carpools/spaces, and engage with community events. A trust rating system keeps interactions accountable, and local farmers get direct access to community buyers.

How we built it

We started with wireframing the core modules (group buying, sharing, community) in Figma. Backend: Node.js/Express with MongoDB for storing listings/campaigns. Frontend: React/Bootstrap for responsive, card-based UI (adhering to teal/orange brand colors). Hosted on AWS/Vercel for reliable access.

Challenges we ran into

Designing the trust rating flow to trigger only after completed transactions was tricky—we had to map status logic (Gathering → Confirmed → Completed) to prevent duplicate ratings. Also, ensuring mobile responsiveness for pickup location/availability schedules took multiple iterations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a seamless join flow for group buys (1-click join for authenticated users) and a sharing request system that blocks over-booking for single-unit items. The platform now has 50+ local users testing it, with 80% of group buys hitting minimum participant counts.

What we learned

We mastered mapping business rules (e.g., campaign cancellation logic) to code, and learned that user-centric design (e.g., anonymized participant lists) builds trust. We also realized how critical clear status tracking is for user confidence in group buys.

What's next for this project

Add in-app chat to let neighbors coordinate pickup/sharing details, integrate local farm APIs for real-time product availability, and build a search function for faster listing/campaign discovery. We also plan to test push notifications for status updates!
