Inspiration

As someone who’s lived abroad across Europe and North America, I saw how isolating expat life can be – navigating visas, local norms, and finding community feels overwhelming. I wanted to build a space that centralizes everything expats need, with a design that feels premium and welcoming, mirroring the global, connected experience we crave.

What it does

ExpatHub is a mobile-first community platform for expats, offering city-specific community hubs, visa/immigration guidance, local life tips, language exchange matching, social event listings, and premium resources to simplify life abroad. Every element is crafted for seamless, immersive interaction – from dynamic parallax backgrounds to intuitive filtering for local communities.

How we built it

I started with wireframing core user flows in Figma, prioritizing mobile responsiveness. For development, I used React/Next.js for structure, Tailwind CSS for styling, and GSAP to implement advanced animations (parallax, 3D tilts, glassmorphism). I integrated Mapbox for location-based features and Chart.js for real-time stats visualization, leaning into GPU-accelerated animations to ensure 60fps performance across devices.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdle was balancing high-end animations with performance – ensuring complex parallax and particle effects didn’t lag on mobile. I also struggled with making filterable community content feel smooth, requiring custom easing functions and lazy loading to keep transitions seamless. Adapting glassmorphism for cross-browser compatibility added another layer of complexity.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We achieved buttery-smooth animations (300-500ms transitions) across all devices, with GPU acceleration keeping performance consistent. The interactive 3D globe and cursor-following spotlight effects create a truly immersive experience, and user testing showed expats found the platform intuitive and emotionally resonant – it feels like a “home away from home.”

What we learned

I mastered advanced CSS/JS animation techniques, including scroll-triggered reveals and glassmorphism, and learned to prioritize performance without compromising design. Most importantly, I understood how critical emotional design is for expat users – small micro-interactions and warm, global color palettes make the platform feel human, not just functional.

What's next for this project

Next, I plan to add real-time chat for language exchange partners, integrate local business partnerships for exclusive expat discounts, and expand city coverage to more European/US hubs (Madrid, Chicago, Amsterdam). I also want to add personalized content recommendations based on a user’s expat journey stage (relocation, long-term residency, etc.).
