What is it?

Communitools is an innovative new platform to promote resource sharing in local communities. Tools and equipment like lawnmowers, drills, ladders, pressure washers and steam cleaners are expensive purchases that end up sitting in storage for most of the year. Renting out your tools for others to use is a great way of earning money and reducing waste, and renting out tools saves you the storage and investment of buying them for yourself

Access Versus Ownership and the Circular Economy

As we move towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly society, we have to question the way we use materials. Do we really need to own a product we only use occasionally? When all we need from that product is access and not ownership? Having shared resources will reduce excess production, reduce environment and natural resource waste, and will bring local communities together to support each other.

Environmental Sustainability

Many products used today are purchased based on a short term need, whether that be the drill bought to put up a few shelves, or a power washer to clean the driveway. By increasing access to equipment needed on a case by case basis, we can not only reduce the cost to everyday people, but also reduce the number of tools in circulation, and therefore the amount of materials used.

The Dream

By taking a percentage of each transaction made on the app, we believe we can continue to fund further improvements, and aim to eventually create centres containing our own tools to allow access to an even wider range of items.

Supporting Local Economies

Communitools will allow user to rent out tools and equipment that are usually only used a few times a year meaning that they can make extra money from equipment that would just be collecting dust otherwise. Another benefit of tool sharing is that consumers will not need to buy tools for a one-off use and can rent from another user for a much lower price instead. This will save the consumer money and will benefit the users providing equipment.

Social Purpose

By reducing the capital expenditure associated with complicated pieces of equipment, we can allow people more access to opportunities they may not have previously had, whether that be in a new business venture or simple home improvement. In addition, we believe that our idea will foster better community relations and collaboration, which has proved to be a foundation of society in recent times

Future Improvements

Proximity based recommendation algorithm to better connect users for peer-to-peer lending Potential for large communal collections of equipment to serve as a central source for communities Create an incentives scheme to reward people for listing their tools to be shared
