Inspiration

Our team is comprised of women that hold a range of identities. As our time at UNC comes to an end, we've reflected a lot about how the past four years in Chapel Hill have shaped us into who we are. We've connected with businesses, communities, and spaces all over Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and the greater Triangle area. We wanted to put all of these inclusive places in one app where we can share them with others.

What it does

Our app has three main functionalities: searching for places, making itineraries, and connecting with friends.

Places

Each place on our app includes their name, address, distance from you, picture, and any tags that may pertain to it. For example, women-owned, LGBTQ+ friendly, Latinx-owned, Asian-owned, wtc

Itineraries

Users are able to create itineraries with different names, descriptions, dates, and whether you're doing stuff with a group or solo. You can also include an icon the reflects the vibe of the day!

Friends

Users can connect with friends by adding them by username and viewing them all in one place. You're also able to make groups of friends, which you can add a personalized name to.

How we built it

Backend

The backend was built using FastAPI, a Python framework. The backend communicates with a Postgres database that holds user, place, and group information.

Frontend

The frontend was built using React Native, a JavaScript framework that works across multiple mobile platforms.

Challenges we ran into

The backend ran into issues setting up a database with session data, authentication, and getting the API the load across different devices. The frontend ran into issues with different React Native packages, sifting through them to find the best ones for our app's intended purpose.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're most proud of hacking for so long! We had never coded for this long at a time, so we're proud of getting through it together. We communicated really well and the app reflect our vision.

What we learned

We got really good at fixing errors as they came in. We got a rhythm down for debugging, which is something we'll take with us after this hackathon.

What's next for DiscovEra

We want to include a chat feature that allows you to talk to new people, as well as your group in a single group chat. The chat would include ways to share the places found in search. We also hope that our app encourages local businesses and spaces to join by making their spaces more inclusive.
