Inspiration
The inspiration for our project, "CommuniGuard Hub," stems from our commitment to ensuring the accessibility of essential resources, such as period products and contraceptives for everyone. Recognizing the challenges individuals face in obtaining these items, our team was motivated to create a solution that empowers people by providing a user-friendly platform to easily locate free period products and contraceptives.
What it does
"CommuniGuard Hub" is a website designed to bridge the gap in access to free period products and contraceptives. The platform features an interactive map that shows marked locations where these essential items are available for free. Users can navigate the map to find nearby locations, represented by dots. Additionally, users can actively contribute to the community by reporting the status of products – indicating whether items are available or if they've run out. Moreover, users can share newfound locations in a collaborative effort to expand the network of accessible resources. The platform also includes a dedicated Sexual Education tab, providing users with valuable information and resources related to sexual health to empower individuals with the necessary health knowledge.
How we built it
We used HTML and R, made our own data frame in R and input locations near UNC that had free menstrual and contraceptive products. The map integration involved using dots to represent the locations of these products, ensuring an intuitive and responsive user experience. We also found research to add facts to our Sex Ed site with usable links to additional resources.
Challenges we ran into
Integrating real-time location data, ensuring accurate mapping, and managing user-generated content required innovative solutions. Overcoming these challenges strengthened our team's technical proficiency and highlighted the importance of robust data validation to maintain the platform's integrity.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're happy we made "CommuniGuard Hub" because it shows we care about helping everyone. We want to work together and help our community have accessibility to necessary resources. We're all from different backgrounds and majors so having been able to create an interactable website was a huge success for us.
What we learned
We learned how to use maps and make them, how to use HTML, and all the different features we can incorporate into a website plus how we can edit them.
What's next for CommuniGuard Hub
Our goal is to reach people around the world, especially in developing countries, ensuring that everyone has access to essential resources. One feature is the ability to change the language on the website. We want to be accessible to people everywhere, regardless of language barriers.
