Inspiration
Our app was inspired by major social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter, as well as, community platforms like NextDoor and the EarthEcho International GenSea platform. We added our own twist on the social media aspect of the app by creating it with a distinct interface and pre-determined utility of the post feature- which is to create and organize environmentalist events and cleanups for your community.
What it does
CommuniClean grants individuals access to a network of environmental advocates in their community. By uniting people with the goal of pollution management, the productivity and organization of community cleanups should be significantly improved. The features that make this possible include, chatting/messaging other users, being able to upload + organize events, and being able to interact with other user's posts + events.
How we built it
This app was built using Android Studio with Firebase as the back-end.
Challenges we ran into
We initially planned on having more features to encourage users to participate in community events, such as a badge feature where you can receive badges for participating in events and picking up a certain amount of trash, a logging page for students to track + earn service hours for their event participation, a community calendar to see upcoming events, or a web-viewing page where you can access the NCDEQ anonymous reporting form from the app. However, time constraints were our greatest challenge and we couldn’t implement the initial features we wanted in time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our group is extremely proud of CommuniClean as it stands. We had great intra-team communication throughout the development process and think that CommuniClean has the potential to revolutionize community involvement in pollution management.
What we learned
Our group learned the value of productive collaboration and the power of meaningful discussion. Both of these things are reflected in our app, as it is a unique concatenation of our group’s diverse ideas.
What's next for CommuniClean
With the continued development of CommuniClean, we hope to implement more robust features with the hope of further motivating individuals to be involved with the restoration of local habitats and the environmental preservation of their communities. Additionally, we want to garner the support of our own community to continue the development of this app by collaborating with local environmental leaders.
