Inspiration

Do you have trouble paying off your student loans? Finding yourself buying way too many iced lattes at Starbucks? With CommonCents, you'll be able to keep track of all of your spending- all in one place! With your spending habits analyzed and broken down into stats, we'll give you tips on your general spending, and pointers on where you can save more.

What it does

Most consumers pay for daily necessities directly through the bank, commonly through applications such as PayBilt. CommonCents aims to pull the user transaction history and provide an analysis of the user's spending habits by categorizing each transaction using AI. This information is then graphed into various forms so users are able to visualize their spending.

Dashboard - Gives an overview of expenses over the past 6 months Trends - Illustrates the spending habits of a specific category over 6 months Breakdown - Subcategorizes the specific category, and provides suggestions on ways to save

How we built it

This is a web app, made mainly using React and JavaScript.

Challenges we ran into

Going into this hackathon, most of us were familiar with front-end development. We had a general lack of knowledge regarding full-stack development, API calls, and backend HTTP requests. That didn't stop us from being ambitious in our project! Thanks to the many mentors, workshops and other resources available, we were able to create something similar to our goals.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Many core concepts were executed, and we created a functioning budget app with an effective UI/UX. We were able to take advantage of the database provided by Firebase and we're able to set up the scripts to populate the database from CSV files. Tackling the graph was a challenge we are proud to have overcome, as it required us to both learn the react library recharts and react

What we learned

We've learned much about:

  • learning and collaborating effectively on full-stack development
  • backend HTTP requests
  • database management using Firebase
  • React, JavaScript, HTML and CSS We've also learned to:
  • take breaks when solving problems!
  • set reasonable expectations given the skill set and time limit

What's next for CommonCents

  • Further improvement for subcategorization
  • Better integration with PayBilt API
